Implementing Training Ideas

After coming back from Cisco Live and then going on vacation to Traverse City Michigan it is now time to start implementing some of the things I learned in Las Vegas.  My two immediate projects are upgrading to ACS 4.2 and a more robust easier to use Syslog server.

ACS goals:

  • Migrate network equipment from using Windows radius services
  • Ensure correct PEAP implementation
  • Integrate ACS with Active Directory
  • Create level of authorization to allow team members certain rights on network equipment.

Syslog goals:

  • Move from current Windows solution to a linux syslog-ng solution
  • Capture to a MySQL database
  • Ease of migration and growth
  • Reporting on certain events from equipment
  • Give access to management on certain reporting functions

So that is what I will be working on the rest of July and some of August.

At Cisco Live! 2010

Make sure to follow me on twitter @jacobstabl and also follow #cllv10 and @ciscolive for up to the minute on goings of fellow Networkers.

So far I have been to 2 sessions and the first one was very dry and full of power point. The second one I got a better understanding of the purpose of Nexxus switches in our network. The emphasis was on design of the product and not integration but that is OK.

Next session for today is Care and Feeding of EIGRP which I hope is awesome with design of Rosetta’s new building and full EIGRP implementation (we are currently using it but building group up will help).

CCNA exam scheduled

I have scheduled to take my CCNA exam while at Cisco Networkers in Las Vegas this year. I am scheduled for July 1st so I need to get my butt in gear and start studying. Most of my studying is going to be with practice exams to get used to the style of the questions. Also I need to brush up on subnetting a bit.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Available Now!

This morning I went to Ubuntu’s website and saw that 10.04 was not available in a production release and I was really bummed because I thought that April 29th was the release date.

To my amazement at 2:30PM EST I visited the site again and a production version is available to download!!!

Download Ubuntu here!

Time to start upgrading and installing this awesome release on all my equipment.

Will be at Networkers Live 2010

Well I just heard word that I will be attending Cisco Networkers Live 2010! I am so excited, elated, and any other adjective you can think of! This is a huge deal for me to finally attend Cisco Networkers Live in my 8 year career of Cisco professionalism. So if you will be there let me know and I would like to meet up with some colleagues.

Just got my first CME working!

I am pretty lucky where I work because we have a lot of good spare networking equipment running around the office.  So I took it upon myself to build a fairly elaborate network for testing new ideas, production configuration testing, and everything else you would ever want to test.

lablayout

ASA 5510
3550  POE switch
2811 router
1252 A/B/G/N Access Point
7911 IP Phone
7920 Wireless IP Phone
7975 IP Phone

So I took the time to use the 3845 as the CME for the network. This was a great learning experience on SCCP, phone loads, and general network routing. I would like to start learning some QoS on the switches and access points.

Recover a Cisco Router from Rommon

Today I was playing in the lab and I was trying to put a new IOS on my router using TFTP. So I did the normal commands:

copy tftp://172.30.1.10/<IOS> flash:

Everything copied fine and checksum was good… so I thought.  I reboot the router and it boots directly into ROMMON telling me that the IOS checksum failed.  So after a bit of playing around I decided I need to put the IOS back on using TFTP and this is how I did it.

IP_ADDRESS=172.30.1.3
IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.255.0.0
DEFAULT_GATEWAY=172.30.1.1
TFTP_SERVER=172.30.1.10
TFTP_FILE=C3845-IPVOICEK9-MZ.124-20.T4.BIN

tftpdnld

That downloaded the IOS to the flash and the reboot the router with that IOS set as system boot.  Saved my day!

Warning all of the above commands are case sensitive or you will get an error. Hope this helps someone.
